Cara Hochalter, pastor of the Charlemont Federated Church set to work with other volunteers to turn a strip of church lawn into a Squash Patch.

"Charlemont Federated Church is thrilled to be participating in Plant a Row for the Hungry by creating our own Squash Patch. Pat Leuchtman had this idea and helped us plant a patch using the lasagna method! Great fun and the little plants are already up and growing. Winter squash for Good Neighbors this fall!" Cara said.

Volunteers donated rotted manure, cardboard, wood chips and labor to set up the Squash Patch which should require very little labor over the summer. Some of us think that nothing is prettier in the edible garden than vigorous sprawling squash vines.

Participating Agencies

We gardeners often have extra produce that we cannot use. Think of all those zucchini bats! But they don't have to go into unlocked cars or onto the compost pile. There are those throughout the county who can use that fresh healthy food whether it is a head of lettuce or broccoli or a bushel of beans. The following is a list of agencies and meal sites who will gladly accept any amount of produce from your garden, along with their address and open hours. One of them may be near you.

Here's to happy eating for all!

We Invite You to Join Us!

Since 1995, American gardeners have donated over 14 million pounds of herbs and vegetables to feed the hungry in our local neighborhoods and communities.

Plant a Row for the Hungry is proving that each person can make a difference! We hope that gardeners in Franklin County will consider joining us today. Stay tuned for updates.
